FACE SHAPE-SQUARE

 SNAZZY SQUARE

DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC:

Your strong jawline! And your face’s shorter length. ⬜️ Different from round in that you don’t have much softness in your face — you have sharpness in your features.

  • The forehead, cheekbones and jawline are all about the same widths.
  • Sides of face are usually straight.
  • The squared jawline is the most obvious feature.
  • Strong bone structure.
  • Face is nearly as wide as it is long. Ratio is close to 1:1.

CELEBRITIES:

Rachel McAdams, Nicole Richie, Diane Kruger, Margot Robbie, Cameron Diaz, Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Evan Rachel Wood, Billie Piper, Heidi Klum, Bella Heathcote, Olivia Wilde, Katie Holmes, Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, Lea Michele, Minnie Driver, Rosario Dawson, Sandra Bullock, Lucy Hale, Penelope Cruz, Audrey Hepburn, Lily Aldridge

EARRINGS:

The square face is ideal for wearing large oval hoops, long drop and narrow chandelier earrings. Keep in mind that opposites attract for this face shape and choose long narrow designs. This face needs jewelry that adds length and camouflages its width, so any styles that create an illusion of length will be flattering for a square face. Avoid short post (button) and wide chandelier styles.

Small earrings. Elongated earrings with a round or oval shape, medium length or long. Hoops—oversized hoops that brush the jaw line or extend below the jaw line. Multi-tiered earrings.

Careful: Square shaped earrings and very wide earrings.

NECKLACES:

Square faces need necklaces with length and curves to soften the strong jaw line. Princess, matinee, opera and rope lengths are ideal (especially if you have a short neck), since they create a vertical line to lengthen the square face. Large focal components on necklaces form a "U," drawing attention below the neck to give the appearance of a longer face. Choose pendants or focal components with curves and swirls to counter the strong angular elements of the jaw.

Longer necklaces are usually a good choice. Collar length necklaces.

NECKLINES:

Square faces need curves and vertical influences, to soften the strong jaw line and make the face appear more oval. Consider a scalloped edge or lace trim on curved necklines. This face shape is often accompanied by a variety of body styles, so choose necklines that work best with each individual's body style.

Ideal necklines: V-neck, deep Sabrina neckline, moderate cowl neck, scoop neckline, sweetheart neckline

Avoid: Empire(square) neckline

V-necks, scoop necks, sweetheart necklines.

Careful: Square necklines will visually widen your jawline and emphasize your square face.

SUNGLASSES:

A pair of sunnies that have a rounder and thinner (or rimless) frame won’t overwhelm your face’s angular lines. Think rounder shapes and oval shapes, the butterfly shape, cat-eye shapes, shield styles, aviators (with angles more round than square). Dark or bold colors. Make sure the width of the frame is slightly wider than your cheekbones.

Careful: Geometric and square shapes. Light colored frames.

HATS:

Round brim hats will accent your face shape—anything with a curved silhouette. Soft designs like wide brimmed floppy hats or curvy lines like bowler hats are especially flattering. Feminine hats with curvy lines will help soften the lines of your face.

Choose derby hats, bucket hats, cloches, newsboys, center-dented fedoras, homburgs, bowler styles, trapper hats with the earflaps worn down, berets, beanies worn back on the forehead, scarves wrapped around head, softer styles with no harsh angles or geometric lines. Wear your brims on an angle whenever possible. Wide brimmed hats with a rounded prominent crown. Choose hats that sit high on your forehead to elongate your face shape.

Careful: Hats with a flat top, a tapered crown, short brims, or hats without a brim. Sun hats or cloches with flat or angled tops.

EYEBROWS:

A thicker, stronger color and shape balances your heavier jawline. A defined sharp peak at the top of the brow makes the brow appear stronger (think Olivia Wilde or Angelina Jolie).

HAIRSTYLES:

The goal is to soften your face shape and its features. Medium-length styles slightly past the shoulders, and long styles incorporating chin length layers, are slimming. Voluminous waves and curls or a soft blowout soften the angles of your face. Middle or slightly off-center parting. Brigette Bardot bangs. Bangs that are longer, broken up and full, or wispy half fringes. Textured bob cuts which fall onto the face and relaxed waves help disguise the widest points of the face. You can choose to accentuate the squareness of your face with some blunt bangs or a short bob to show off that strong jawline. Try a headband with a wavy hairstyle for an instantly chic look.

Careful: Short haircuts that stop at your wide jaw. Overly solid bangs or blunt hairstyles. Any severe, slicked back looks if you’re trying to soften your face shape.

BRIDAL TIPS:

The square face needs a strong vertical focus for the eye to follow. Low necklines with gentle curves, accompanied by the longer necklace lengths and minimal earring styles, will create a vertical visual line. Keep in mind the size of the bride, her coloring and the simplicity (or ornateness) of her gown--a more ornate gown can support more ornate jewelry. Matching the patterns, designs, textures and qualities of her gown completes the presentation.

Hairpieces at the top of the head, with gentle curves, curls or flowers will add the appearance of length to the face. Consider a tiara-style headdress for extra height. A short veil down the back and sides of the head, with the best length about 1-1/2 inches below the chin or extending to the shoulder to reduce and soften the squareness of the jaw.Headdresses, which put some wispy or curving elements on the forehead, or a single side piece which adds waves or embellishment at the temple is perfect for the square face.
